In a small apartment, the most space is usually taken up by the bed. It is empty during the day, but it is only a few square meters that could be used for work, rest or storage. That's why more and more adults choose loft bed. We advise you when it is a good solution and what to check before purchasing.

When is a loft bed suitable for an adult?

A loft bed is a good idea when:

  • you live in studio apartment and the bedroom is also a living room and an office,
  • you arrange student apartment or an apartment for rent,
  • you need places to work from home, and you don't have a separate room for an office,
  • you have a small bedroom where the bed and wardrobe don't fit next to each other,
  • you arrange guest room, which performs a different function every day.

A loft bed may not be the best choice if you have joint or spine problems, get up often at night or your apartment has low ceilings. Then it will work better sofa with mattress drawer or a bed with drawers.

Load capacity: can the loft bed support an adult person?

This is the first question worth asking. A loft bed for an adult must have a solid structure and high load-bearing capacity. Our loft beds are made of solid wood and have load capacity 200 kg. The set also includes a holder for attaching the bed to the wall, which additionally stiffens the structure.

Which mattress should you choose for the loft bed?

An adult will be most comfortable on a long mattress 200 cm and width at least 90 cm. Our loft beds are available in sizes from 80 × 180 cm to 120 × 200 cm. Width 120 cm that's a lot of freedom for one person and a reasonable width in a smaller space.

The thickness of the mattress is important for safety. We recommend thick mattresses 10–22 cm. They have barriers 47 cm height from the frame, so with a thinner mattress the protection is higher. You can read more about choosing a mattress in the article how to choose a mattress for a bed.

Ceiling height and clearance under the bed

Before purchasing, measure the height of the room. The standard clearance under our bed is: 142 cm, and the total height of the bed 195 cm. On request, we can raise the clearance to 170 cm.

  • Ground clearance 142 cm enough to place a desk and chair, sofa or bookcase under the bed. You can sit there comfortably, but you can't stand straight.
  • Higher ground clearance It will be useful for adults who want to have a wardrobe under the bed or move around there more freely.

Also think about the space above the mattress. In an apartment with a typical height of approx 250–260 cm, with a standard clearance, there is more or less left above the mattress 90 cm. This is enough to lie comfortably and read, but a tall person will sit on the bed slightly tilted. If this is important to you, choose a thinner mattress. In townhouses with high ceilings, you can afford a higher ground clearance and still have plenty of headroom.

What can fit under a loft bed?

This is the biggest advantage of the loft bed. Under the bed you can arrange:

  1. Home office. The loft bed with a desk has a high top 73 cm and depth 70 cm, adjusted to the width of the bed. This is a comfortable workstation for working with a laptop and monitor.
  2. Relaxation corner. A small armchair, lamp and bookshelf create a cozy reading zone.
  3. Wardrobe. A clothes hanger, chest of drawers and shoe baskets allow you to do without a large wardrobe.
  4. A place to sleep for a guest. There is room for a small sofa under the loft bed, which you can unfold for a guest if necessary.

Ladder: from the side or from the front?

An adult climbs into bed several times a day, so the comfort of a ladder is important.

  • In models N01 and N02 the ladder is on the shorter side of the bed (v N01 vertical, in N02 inclined).
  • In models N03–N06 the ladder is on the longer side.

An inclined ladder is more convenient for adults because you can climb it similarly to stairs. If you are wondering which model to choose, read our article loft bed N03, N05 or N06.

How to ensure that the loft bed does not overwhelm the interior?

  • Choose a light finish, for example white, white with oak or bleached oak. Light wood optically relieves the structure.
  • Place the bed against a wall without a window, so that it does not block the daylight.
  • Add lighting under the loft bed: a desk lamp or an LED strip. The area under the bed will then not be dark.
  • Adjust the furniture under the loft bed to the color of the bed so that the whole thing looks like one, well-thought-out piece of furniture.
